An application for building consent has just been lodged for a new BAPS Hindu temple for Wellington to be built at 226 Cambridge Terrace in Naenae. Concept design commenced in 2019 after BAPS New Zealand Incorporated purchased the property, which was home to a pharmapheutical distribution warehouse. This has since been demolished and the site cleared of all buildings and structures. Jethro Neeson of RDCL has completed a geotechnical investigation of the site and Dave Bull of Hail Environmental has checked the site for any contamination. Garth Morris of SED Consultants in Tauranga is the structural engineer for the project and Apex Air have designed the mechanical services.
A Shilanyas Mahotsav, or ground breaking ceremony, for the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir was held over the weekend of 19 - 20 June 2021 and over 800 devotees participated in-person in the Vedic maharaja ceremony in Wellington, with another 200 devotees at the Auckland Mandir and 35 at the Hamilton Mandir participated via the live webcast.
Following a ceremony attended by over 1,200 devotees and dignitaries, Paramchintan Swami and other resident sadhus visited the new mandir site to lay foundation bricks sanctified by Param Pujya Swami Maharaj in India on 31 May 2021.
